How to Play

Play 2048 online for free. 2048 is a stone merging game where players merge adjacent tiles of the same value together to a title of double their value, trying to merge their way up from 2 to 2048. This game is rendered in mobile-friendly HTML5, so it offers cross-device gameplay. You can play it on mobile devices like Apple iPhones, Google Android powered cell phones from manufactures like Samsung, tablets like the iPad or Kindle Fire, laptops, and Windows-powered desktop computers. All game files are stored locally in your web browser cache. This game works in Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and other modern web browsers.

Starting the Game

The game starts with you in active play.
Game Controls
- Desktop
  - Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the tiles around.
  - Touchscreen devices
    - Swipe the screen with your finger to move the tiles.
    - The game shows your current score and all time top score in the upper right corner.

      - Merging
        When 2 adjacent cells have the same value if you press the arrow key to slide the tiles toward one another then the two tiles will merge into a single tile of double the value in the direction of the slide.
        If you have 3 consecutive stones of the same value the the first 2 stones in the direction of the move will merge together.
        If you have 4 consecutive stones of the same value then all 4 will merge into 2 stones in the 2 spots furthest along in the direction of the move.
        Moving
        Stones always move as far as they can in the direction of your movement until they run into the edge of the screen or another stone.
        By manipulating the order stones merge and moving them around the playing field you can slowly move stones of the same value that are not near one another into adjacent placements.
        To move in any particular direction you need at least one open cell to be on the wall in the direction you are moving or somewhere other than the opposing wall.
        If the only open cells are on the opposing wall or in a sequence stemming from an open cell on the opposing wall then you will have to move in that direction rather than away from it.
        New Stones
        When you move stones a new stone enters the playing field on the opposite side of the grid.
        The new stone can be valued at 2 or 4.
        Game Over
        The game ends when you have the 4×4 grid full of 16 stones where there are no adjacent stones of the same value.
        The game starts off easy with only 2 of the 16 places filled, but gets harder the longer you play as the spaces fill up and the values of stones grow.
        To get to 2048 you need to make the following merges.
        merge 2 tiles to get 4
        merge 4 tiles to get 8
        merge 8 tiles to get 16
        merge 16 tiles to get 32
        merge 32 tiles to get 64
        merge 64 tiles to get 128
        merge 128 tiles to get 256
        merge 256 tiles to get 512
        merge 512 tiles to get 1024
        merge 1024 tiles to get 2048
        The number of merges is a geometric sequence as you need 2 of each stone to make the next, so you need to make 1025 merges to make a 2048 stone.
        The 1025 number presumes all stones start off as a 2, but some start off as a 4 (about 1 in 10 to 1 in 20), so the total number of merges might be closer to around 1,000 depending on how many 4 stones appear in the game.

        The game has no adult themed content.
