Game Play Instructions

How to Play

Play Totem Solitaire online for free. Totem Solitaire is a 32-stage game which combines Pyramid Solitaire with free cell. Match pairs of cards that form the number 13 to clear them from the tableau, Move cards you don't want yet removed but want out of your way to the free cell so you can clear others faster. Each level has a unique & challenging board layout. This game is rendered in mobile-friendly HTML5, so it offers cross-device gameplay. You can play it on mobile devices like Apple iPhones, Google Android powered cell phones from manufactures like Samsung, tablets like the iPad or Kindle Fire, laptops, and Windows-powered desktop computers. All game files are stored locally in your web browser cache. This game works in Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and other modern web browsers.

  • Starting the Game
    • On the welcome screen, select Play to begin.
    • Select Help to learn the game’s rules.
    • Select High Scores to view the game’s leaderboard.
    • Use the drop-down list on the bottom right corner of the screen to choose the game’s language.
    • Use the gear button to open the following controls:
      • Speaker button: Turns the game’s audio effects on and off
      • Music button: Turns the game’s music on and off
      • Reset button: Clears your game’s progress
        • Your web browser automatically saves your game progress.
        • Game Controls
          • Desktop
            • With your mouse, left click to select card.
            • Touchscreen devices
              • Tap on the cards onscreen with your fingers to select them.
              • Controls and indicators
                • The game’s controls and indicators are shown on the right side of the screen. From the top, they are as follows:
                  • Level number
                  • Score
                  • Timer
                  • Middle row (clockwise from left):
                    • Pause button
                    • Enlarge button: Lets you switch between windowed and full-screen modes
                    • Speaker button
                    • Music button
                    • Undo button
                    • Hint button
                    • Game Play
                      • Basic rules
                        • Objectives
                          • Clear the entire stack of cards by forming pairs of cards whose sums equal 13.
                            • To clear cards, select one card, then select another.
                            • You can pair cards of any suit and color.
                            • For the purposes of this game, these cards have the following values:
                              • Ace: 1
                              • Jack: 11
                              • Queen: 12
                              • King: 13
                              • Kings can be removed by themselves.
                              • Valid pairs are Ace-Queen, 2-Jack, 3-10, 4-9, 5-8, 6-7.
                              • Keep removing pairs until the entire stack is gone.
                                • Remove the entire stack before the timer runs out.
                                • If you run out of time or valid pairs, you fail the level.
                                • The free cell
                                  • The free cell is a cell located somewhere in the stack (it changes position from level to level).
                                  • Select and drag a card into the free cell to place it there.
                                  • The free cell allows you to remove a card from its previous position:
                                    • You can “save” this card for later if you think it’s located somewhere inopportune.
                                    • You also free up the cards below it.
                                    • You can only place one card in the free cell at any given time.
                                    • Undos and hints
                                      • You have a limited number of undos and hints to help you through the game. You get 3 of each one per level.
                                      • Hints show you a potential card pair. They come with a point penalty.
                                      • Undos take back your last action. They basically undo the points you’ve earned.
                                        • Levels
                                          • Levels are unlocked sequentially.
                                            • Only the first level is playable at the start of the game.
                                            • Finish one level to unlock the next.
                                            • After finishing the level, the game returns you to the level selection screen.
                                            • There are 32 levels in this game.
                                              • You can replay any of the levels you’ve unlocked to try to earn a better score.
                                              • If you fail a level you can try it again.
                                              • Time limits
                                                • Each level has a unique timer.
                                                • The first level offers 5 minutes to beat it.
                                                • The time limit goes down by 10 seconds for each subsequent level through the first 16 levels.
                                                • The time limit is 3 minutes for both levels 16 and 17.
                                                • Strategy
                                                  • Try to keep the free cell open most of the time other than when you are using it because either you must, or because you are using it to temporarily store a card you will quickly clear out.
                                                    • Doing this provides you enhanced flexibility throughout the remainder of the game.
                                                    • If you see a card laying atop its match you can set one in the free cell and then quickly match them off.
                                                    • Try to work on the longest tableau stacks whenever possible so you have many match options to choose from and do not need to make a long string of consecutive matches using only 1 or 2 stacks and the free cell.
                                                    • A flip way of saying the above tip is that if you have isolated cards or cards in shallow stacks with only a couple cards it is beneficial to save those toward the end of the level so you have many potential matches as you work your way through the longer stacks.
                                                    • Scoring
                                                      • You have 2 scores for this game:
                                                        • Level scores
                                                        • Total score
                                                        • Your level score is the score you’ve earned by playing a level.
                                                          • Each pair of cards you clear is worth 10 points, for a maximum card-based score of 280 points per level.
                                                          • You also get a bonus of 30 points for every second remaining on the timer.
                                                            • On most levels you will likely score more points from the bonus time than from the card laying, as only 10 seconds remaining means more time points than card points.
                                                            • You can replay the level to get a higher level score.
                                                            • You can view your best level score on the level’s icon in the selection screen.
                                                            • Your total score is the sum of all the levels you’ve played.
                                                              • You can increase your level score by replaying previous levels or playing through new ones.
                                                              • Your total score is shown on the bottom center of the level selection screen.
                                                              • You can save your score in the leaderboard by meeting the following conditions:
                                                                • End a level in a game over.
                                                                • Finish all the levels.
                                                                • Target Audience
                                                                  • The game is suited for players who like Pyramid Solitaire card games.
                                                                  • The game has no adult themed content.
